Meet Our Core Team:
Mary Leeds, B.S.W., graduated from Virginia Wesleyan College in Norfolk, Virginia. Mary has extensive experience in her field. During the last twenty-five years, she served as the Director of the Geriatric Institute, Bon Secours DePaul Hospital, Medical Social Worker/Geriatric Care Manager at Sentara Health Systems / Optima and was employed by SeniorCorp, a personal care company as a Geriatric Care Manager. She is the founder and primary business entity for Senior Care Advocate.
Dr. Keith Berger serves Senior Care Advocate in a consulting capacity. He is an internist and gastroenterologist who has been in medical practice in Virginia Beach continuously since 1981. Dr. Berger formed the current Center for Health and Cancer Prevention in 2001. Dr. Berger is a product of Norfolk public schools (Granby), attended Harvard University for undergraduate work, where he received a BS in Biology with honors then attended Duke Medical school for 4 years, subsequently taking a residency at Duke in Internal Medicine for 3 years. His final 2 years of specialized GI training were at Yale.
Dr. Susan Mullen Kaplan PhD, RN, CCRP has worked in the healthcare field for over four decades. She has provided direct clinical care to patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings, nursing education and staff development, clinical research and patient education. Currently she is a nurse specialist coordinating nursing research for Sentara Healthcare. Dr. Kaplan earned her undergraduate degree in nursing from Simmons College in Boston, MA, her master’s degree from Maternal Child-Health by Texas Woman’s University in Dallas, TX, and her PhD from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA.
Margarita F. Simón, MS, FNP-BC, CWCN, DAPWCA specializes in long-term geriatric care. Her areas of expertise include wound care, legal consulting, rehabilitation, sub-acute care and outpatient office internal medicine. She has published and received awards for her medical research findings during her 40+ years of practice. Margarita earned her nursing diploma from Norfolk General Hospital School of Professional Nursing, her B.S. in Nursing from Old Dominion University, her M.S. Family Nurse Practitioner from Hampton University and her certification as a wound nurse specialist from the Medical University of South Carolina.
Brenda Smitherman, CNA, has dedicated much of her life to caring for seniors. Her career has helped set the standard for what it means to provide exceptional care. Brenda has worked privately for many clients as well as on-staff in some of the area's finest retirement communities. Brenda is an outside ambassador for Senior Care Advocate, LLC to the local community and an inside adviser to our diverse team.
